What this experimental progressive band from West Chester, PA brings to the table is a veteran sound from a relatively rookie band. Although they just stepped out onto the scene with their EP,Earthshaper, SKY VS SEA has the electronic bravado to remain a staple in the ambient genre. The album begins with "Welcome Eolian," which is a purely programmed track that sets the tone for the EP.
It blends directly into the next track, "Other Worlds." The true nature of SKY VS SEA explodes with a force to be reckoned with in this song. It's followed by "Snowbird." The lyrics of that song reflect the tone: very emotional and very bitter. The sorrow seems drips out of Orion Moses' voice as he wails the words. "Ignite: Respire" has a haunting synth at the end after the guitar is completely shredded. And the first half of "Workings of a Failed Architect" is a sensational journey, while the last 3 minutes or so are a tone apart from anything else on the EP, instrumental, but soft and comforting in sound.
Normally, I would recommend a song that is very catchy, but the magic of SKY VS SEA is their lack of repetition. Each song is less of a song and more of a poem with darker tendencies, sometimes harsh, but the use of language is phenomenal. Overall, the band has a great sound, so look forward to more from SKY VS SEA.
