The boys of Breathing Blue sure do know how to make a debut. Though this 5-piece band hailing from New Jersey may not yet be a well-known success, thier self-titled debut EP sure is the perfect first step on the way there.
The first track, "A Star in the West", automatically pulls the listener in, building some suspense with a unique base-line and clear yet edgy vocals.
The second track, "Chase The World", is debut single material. With inspirational lyrics ("starlight will guide us through those dark nights / I beg you all to follow me for lives that worth more") and a catchy chorus, this song is sure to be one of the most well-recepted on the EP.
"From Athens to Alcatraz" is perhaps the most addicting track. By no means is it poppy, but there is something about the progression of the song and the vocals that make you listen to this track on repeat. Towards the end of the song, the vocals even get a little angsty - always a good ingredient for a crowd-pleaser.
Included at the end is the bonus song "Sparkle", an easy track to sing along to and a smart way to end the EP.
The album may not be perfect. But for a first impression in the alternative rock scene, it's definitely a step in the right direction.
