These kids have been all over the mid-Atlantic lately, opening for just about everyone, plus an appearance on this little show they like to call TRL. Best part is, they've been together "a little over a year." The Friday Night Boys hail from Northern Virginia and call bands from the area like The Bigger Lights, Crash Boom Bang, Hotspur and 33 West their friends. Norva has always been a hot bed for great local music. But, finally everyone else is starting to notice.
This foursome have signed to the legendary Fueled By Ramen (and Photo Finish, and Party Scene, but I don't know exactly how all that works). The boys seem to be doing something right to end up on TRL before they even announced that they had signed: "Basically, we went through the label [to get on the show]." The way they ended up on the label sounds just as easy, "One day the president [of Fueled By Ramen] called me out of no where."
Seems as if their luck isn't all good, right before the interview, they, "had some one make us this awesome cookie jar. We're considering that good luck now, we had a really bad accident." (Don't worry, they're all alright). I joked that they should call up FBR and ask for a new van, "We don't like to ask for things." "True, you're not Fall Out Boy just yet." "Fall Out Boy can probably pay for their own van..."
These boys could be the next scene sensation, so to speak, with a sound reminiscent of... just about anyone. "We've gotten a lot of personalized t-shirt with like puff paint." It's no wonder FNB are quickly becoming favorites among fans of bands like All Time Low.
Incidentally, they happened to be managed by the power house that manages the Baltimore golden boys. Absolute Management Group manages such bands as The Bigger Lights & Hit The Lights as well. (Check out the interview with Nano a few pages back!) "Oh Nano. Nano is the best. We've been working with him for a long time," Drummer, Chis Barrett says, "it just adds to the whole family environment, with the label & the band. It just couldn't be a better fit."
At the age of 22, vocalist, Andrew Goldstein, is the last to graduate from college, with only one semester left. "[After Andrew gets out of school] We're gonna be touring all the time. We're going to be doing like little weekend things in the Fall. We're going out with ATL in November... We're [also] going to be touring all of Thanksgiving Break."
Not only does their music sound like all your favorite bands, but they listen to all your favorite bands as well, saying they're favorite bands on their label are Cute is What We Aim For, and Paramore. They'd consider their dream tour to consist of FOB and Avril, one big pop punk extravaganza.
As their name suggests, they're fun boys, and incredibly light hearted, "We tried to think of the most fun thing possible. Friday nights is the most fun thing." "What about Saturdays," I ask. When you wake up Saturday you don't have to get ready for the next day, you have to go do stuff, usually. On Sunday's you don't have to do that much stuff, but on Monday's you do..." Andrew rambles, as everyone including the rest of the band looks on. "We like Friday's better," guitarist, Mike Toohey replies at the end.
I asked them what cover song they'd do if they had no stipulations, answers were scattered and a bit odd, "I don't know." "I would do... Spice Girls, "Two Become One." "Girls! Girls! Girls! by Montley Crue." "Billy Jean, but I have to do the video too." The boys new EP will be out on their label in a few weeks, unfortunately none of those, sure to be awesome covers will be on their but, I'm sure despite that it'll be an album to add to your ever increasing collection of catchy pop punk, and yet another band to obsess about.
