"We see it all the time. I didn't even realize it until the name stuck." This is what happens when you name your band Metro Station. Hailing from sunny Hollywood, California. Metro Station's is growing a steady buzz all over the country.
As California bands are great at doing upon the bands inception in 2006 they quickly grew a large online fan base topping the MySpace music charts and making it onto Alternative Press' "22 Best Underground Bands (That Likely Won't Stay Underground for Long)" list. Eventually the band signed to Red Ink after "An intern found us on MySpace."
This interview was done while they were on tour with Motion City Soundtrack. They said their favorite tour was "This one." Also, "We loved the Forever The Sickest Kids Tour, that was amazing... Just Surrender we fucking love those guys like brothers. We The Kings, those guys are awesome, and we're going to go back on tour with them in January"
The tour in January they're referring to is the Really Really Ridiculously Good Looking Tour with Cobra Starship and The Cab also. Being a fairly young band, they've had some really great breaks and amazing tours.
Many people know that Mason Musso and Trace Cyrus are the sibling's of Disney stars Miley Cyrus and Mitchel Musso. (Hannah & Jackson from Hannah Montana!) Some people think Metro Station is getting such recognition due to this fact but Trace says, "You're obviously not going to find out unless you listen to our music [first]."
Cali kids are vicious, I've heard from almost every band I've interviewed, but being the first band I interviewed from California it was great to hear they're opinion. "The Hollywood scene is amazing. The scene there is just really strong. It's kinda really hard to-—it can be hard. They're very judgmental... If you're not doing something that automatically they love, they're not going to care."
For the most part California is the best place to tour or the worst, but Metro Station being from Cali I wanted to know how other cities compare. Their favorite places to tour are "Florida, and Dallas, New York, and of course, Hollywood." If you notice these are the states and cities of their friends and best tours, which says alot about what friends can do. There's some great comradeship among these group of bands that have similar pop influences, and it shows with their tours and interviews.
Got any crazy tour stories? Fingers point at Anthony, "he punched through a window! ANGER PROBLEMS!" "[Then], our tour manager locked the keys in to our van accidently, broke the band window, so we had two broken windows in the same day. Then we put sugar in someone's gas tank." "Did you really?" "No." "We The King's van just broke down because of sugar in their gas tank." "Seriously?" "Yep."
Metro Station released their highly anticipated self-titled album in September 2007. "I don't even know what's good anymore, because top records are selling a fraction of what they used to but so far [our record] is going great, words spreading fast."
The band has an electronic pop dance sound, that could be easily be compared to every other band with an electronic dance sound like Playradioplay or The Secret Handshake, or the most famous band with that stamp. "If we do get compared to a band, no one really knows who to compare us to so they say Hellogoodbye. I think in alot of ways we're alot different than Hellogoodbye," Trace says. "It's like the same, but totally different. It's like oranges & apples but it's still fruit," Mason throws in.
"Any last words?" I ask. "Much love to the fans! Thanks for making all the homemade shirts. Don't be afraid to say hi, you might be shy but we're shy too."
Again I find myself in Ram's Head Live's back room with a band who's got the potential to top the charts with all their talented friends. They're music matches their personalities to a tee. They've got a chill vibe but they still know how to have fun. Every time I pick up this tape recorder lately it feels like I'm listening to some kids watching their dreams come true before my eyes. Make sure you catch Metro Station on the Really Really Ridiculously Good Looking tour on March 4 at The 930 Club! [CO]
